Youth Development Programme launched in Orangeville

The Free State Department of Public Works and Infrastructure yet again joined forces with Sasol Company to recruit 70 young people into a nine (9) Months Youth Development Programme.

These are young unemployed and unskilled people between the ages of 18 and 35 from Orangeville, Metsimaholo Local Municipality. The programme is based on skills training and development intervention that provides general and life skills training, access to practical work experience and mentoring to the participants.

The delighted participants gathered at Orangeville Library on 28 February 2019 for an official induction and programme guide, as well as signing of contracts. The young people participating in the programme come from different backgrounds and hold different levels of qualifications. The programme will run until 30 November 2019.

“I call this an achievement for the Free State Government. Over the past years the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure through the leadership of MEC Dora Kotzee has been mobilizing the youth from disadvantaged backgrounds and improving their standard of living,” said Pumla Tshangela from EPWP.

The programme will be implemented through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), as a government key programme aimed at alleviating poverty and providing income relief through temporary work for the unemployed.

“Sasol is proud to partner with the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure as we launch the second youth development programme in Metsimaholo. We recognise our role in the socio economic development of our people, particularly “our” local communities in which we operate,” said Dr Esmé Young, Acting Vice President at Sasol’s Sasolburg Operations.

One of the participants, Seipati Tapa was so happy and excited to be part of the programme. “I’m so happy to be part of this youth development programme, because I will be able to learn and prepare myself for the future. The programme will equip me with the necessary skills for me to be employable.”

The programme has 3 focus areas, namely personal development, career focused development and contributing to solve community needs. During the programme participants will also contribute towards responding to community needs through physical work such as school patrols, cleaning identified areas, providing environmental education and performing infrastructure maintenance at public facilities.
