The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure continues to lead the provision of sustainable built infrastructure in the Province. During the last Quarter of the financial period, 2018/2019 the Department participated in the official hand-over and opening of two schools, the Grassland High School in Bloemfontein, Mangaung Metro and the Thembalihle Primary School in Vrede, Phumelela Local Municipality.

The coming to life of these two schools (and others that have been handed over and opened) was made possible by the internal technical capacity the Department has over the years developed and enhanced. These included among others our engineers in the different disciplines, quantity surveyors, inspectors, artisans in the different trades and other related technical capacity housed under our key – Works, Construction and Maintenance and PMU Components.

THE SCOPE FOR THE MAIN GRASSLAND HIGH SCHOOL BLOCK INCLUDES:

24 Classrooms, Admin Block, Library, Hall, Math Lab, Science Lab, Computer Lab, Biology Lab, Nutrition Centre, media Centre and research facility just to mention a few. The principal of Grassland Secondary, Mr Mohai called on the Community of Grassland and surrounding areas to preserve the beauty of this world class institution. The beauty you see in and outside the school must stand the test of time. They must be passed on from generation to generation. About R64 million was budgeted and used for the construction of this school project while about 174 people were recruited and employed into the project.

THE SCOPE FOR THE MAIN THEMBALIHLE PRIMARY SCHOOL INCLUDES:

8 X Blocks with 24 classrooms, Admin Block, Library, Multi Purpose Centre, Science Lab, Computer Lab, A Hall, and Guard House, 4 X Ablution Blocks, Nutrition Centre and a massive playground on the south side of the yard. At the Vrede, Thembalihle site the Department managed to create about 85 work opportunities with a special benefit to local labours and specialised works, on trades like Plumbing, Electrical, Earthworks, Ceilings, Painting, Steelworks and Mechanical.

As per norm, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure prides itself of the best delivered infrastructure projects especially these two schools, Grassland Secondary and Thembalihle Primary.

Here we can safely say, we have delivered the best and satisfactory quality work as our workmanship is acceptable, housekeeping and landscaping is satisfactory, PPE has and complies with OHS standards.
